When he saw his wife, his expression of shock was almost comical and like something out of a movie. My wife’s mother didn’t say a word.
She merely stood there, her fury radiating.
Tom?
Where is he? I insisted.
“I don’t have the foggiest idea,” my father by marriage stammered, obviously shook by our presence. While I carried on looking upstairs, my mother-in-law remained with him, her still rage filling the space.
Tom and another woman were laughing at something on her phone when I found him in one of the bedrooms with his arm around her.
They both turned when they heard my gasp.
“Layla, what’s this all about? ” He stumbled and struggled to stand.
“What’s my purpose here? Tom, what are you doing here?
“My voice was surprising steady as I asked.
You have deceived me for the past twelve years!
” Sensing the impending storm, the woman next to him slipped out of the room.
However, I had no interest in her. I stated, “We’re finished.
” I am leaving with the children. This can be explained to your mother by you.
” I then turned around and left.
The flight back to the house was hazy.
Denise, who was sitting next to me, exclaimed, “I can’t believe it.
” I can’t believe that our marriages ended like this. Layla, really?
What makes them both capable of this? I gave her a brief, hushed look.
My mother-in-law seemed to have aged more than anything from this brief excursion.
I couldn’t comprehend how we had all been living a lie for so long, and nothing in this made sense.
While I was just waiting for the flight attendant to bring out the drink trolley, I admitted to Denise, “I don’t know when or how this happened. ”
I continued, “But I am telling you now that this must come to an end. ” This cannot continue.
We cannot accompany them.
They aren’t good for us right now and probably won’t be in the future.
” My mother-in-law admitted, “I agree with you.
” My marriage has left me with nothing. Roger had no interest in me at all.
And all the time, Tom didn’t care about you or the boys. ”
I told her, “I already told him that I want a divorce.
”
Denise moved into my house with all of her belongings after we returned, and I moved Tom’s things into boxes in Denise’s house. She said with bitterness, “He and his father can decide what they want to do.
” The repercussions were huge.
Furious that her children had kept the truth from her, my mother-in-law severed all ties with them. Strangely, we became more connected as a result of our shared grief.
In addition, she became a constant presence in my life, insisting on being an active grandmother to my children and wanting to be close to me at all times.
One afternoon, as we sat together in the living room, she said, “I never imagined that it would all come to this.
” I replied, “Me neither.
” However, at least now we know the truth. ”
