“Then I’ll go alone. I could use the space anyway.”
Daniel flinched.
“Just be careful, okay?
On the road. You’ve seemed… tired lately.”
The second the door closed behind Daniel, I counted to five. Then I followed.
I knew he wasn’t headed to the office.
Not with that look in his eyes. He was off to rescue what little dignity he had left.
I trailed his car from a distance, slow and patient. Sure enough, Daniel turned onto the gravel road that led to our cabin.
I gripped the wheel tighter, a grin creeping up my face.
I cranked up the radio, rolled down the window, and let the cold wind slap some clarity into me. I wasn’t scared anymore. I was ready to watch my husband squirm.

I parked a few houses down and waited.
Daniel’s car was already in the driveway. The front door was slightly ajar.
I took a deep breath, fixed my hair in the mirror, and walked in. Voices.
Low.
First Daniel’s. Then hers. That same syrupy venom I remembered.
“No.
I said I’d help if it turned out the kid was mine. He’s not.
And now I want you out of here. Today.”
I stepped inside fully.
“Don’t worry.
She’s already packing.”
They both turned. Daniel’s face drained of color. Jessica, not even flinching, smirked.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emily…”
“No. Let her speak.
I want to hear what she tells me now, with you standing right here.”
Jessica rolled her eyes. “Oh, please.
You’re not seriously taking his side?”
She pointed at Daniel.
“This coward begged me not to tell you. He thought you couldn’t handle it. Classic.”
Daniel snapped.
“That child isn’t even yours.
You borrowed a friend’s kid for the photo! And then used him to squeeze money out of me.”
My mouth dropped open.
Daniel looked at me. Finally.
“Jessica and I ended things years ago.
But she came back a few weeks ago, claiming she had a son. My son. She said if I didn’t give her money and a house, she’d tell you everything and ruin us.”
I stared at him, stunned.
He nodded.
“But I knew how Jessica always twisted things. So I took a DNA test.
And when it came back negative, I told her to leave. For good.”
Daniel turned to Jessica.
“You lied.
Again. And now you’re dragging my wife into it?”
“Dragged? Oh, Daniel.
I ran into her yesterday.
Total accident, I swear.”
She shot me a sarcastic smile. “Isn’t fate funny?
I mean, I got kicked out, humiliated… And then I find myself face to face with the woman you chose over me.
I figured, if I’m getting nothing, the least I could do is blow everything up.”
Daniel was pale.
“You’re evil. You knew exactly what this would do to her.”
Jessica’s smirk grew. “I did.
And honestly?
Worth it.”
“Get out,” I hissed. She glanced at the bathroom door, then back at me with a glint in her eye, tossing her curls.
“You think I didn’t notice? The pale face.
The empty test box in the trash?
Relax. You already won.”
She walked to the door, but before stepping out, she looked over her shoulder. Daniel looked at me, guilt dripping from every pore.
“Emily, I swear, I never touched her.
Not since before we were even engaged. I thought I was handling it.
I didn’t want you hurt.”
His eyes flicked toward the door, then back to me, confused. “Wait… Mommy?
What did she mean by that?” His voice dropped.
“Emily, are you… Are you pregnant?”
I didn’t say anything. Just held his gaze.
Then slowly, I nodded.
“I found out the same night. Right after she left.”
I exhaled, long and slow.
All the rage, the confusion, it was still there. But so was the truth.
I was having a baby.
So I said the only thing I could. “Then let’s stop lying. Let’s start over—for the baby.”
Daniel took my hand like he finally understood how fragile love could be.
Maybe trust had been broken.
But family… family was just beginning. And sometimes, the most unexpected fires leave behind the warmest light.
