My husband has been acting strangely lately—always on his phone and disappearing for “work” at night. There was something off about it. Every excuse he offered made my heart sink.
He was distant and avoided my inquiries. The worst I feared was: that he had lied. Even if it meant losing everything, I needed to know the truth.
To say that it was a happy day is an understatement.
A promotion for my husband, Trent, felt like a big step for our family. Kira, his boss, invited us over for dinner to celebrate.
We were made to feel right at home by Kira and her husband, Colin, who were warm and welcoming. They even went above and beyond to prepare vegetarian meals for Nora, our daughter.
She was just 12 years old at the time, and she was beginning to show the first signs of becoming a teenager.
Kira sat down next to me and smiled as I observed Trent and Colin having a good time laughing by the grill.
Kira stated, “You have a wonderful family.”
“I’m grateful. I smiled at her and said, “You do as well.”
She continued, leaning in a little closer, “I say that to a lot of people.” With yours, on the other hand, I mean it. Together, you look absolutely stunning.
Like you just stepped out of a television commercial.”
In an effort to remain relaxed, I laughed. It’s wonderful to hear that. It means a lot to me.”
Kira responded, “Well, I’m not surprised.” Trent is incredible.
He is our best worker. Smart, dedicated, and always reliable. Additionally, he is so charming and entertaining.
He truly is an ideal man. The kind of man that would make any woman’s life better.
Her words made me feel sick to my stomach. I said, “I know,” looking over at Trent.
With twinkling eyes, Kira said, “But don’t worry.” He flirts with a lot of women at work, but he never goes too far.
He is devoted. the ideal partner.”
Trent was always someone I could count on, a loving husband and father to Nora. However, things had changed recently, and I was unable to ignore it.
I felt uneasy as the words of Kira kept echoing in my head.
Trent appeared distinct. Even during dinner, he was always glued to his phone, checking messages. He began traveling with Kira on more business trips.
He worked late hours alongside Kira when he wasn’t traveling. I tried not to imagine the worst, but I couldn’t ignore the changes.
I had no idea when the last time we were together was. He would dismiss my attempts to bring up how distant he appeared.
He would say, “It’s just work.” I’m worn out. However, that did not cover everything. We hadn’t been really close to one another in months.
I’d think back to when we first got married.
I was pregnant with Nora. We were young, but we loved each other, and we wanted to make it work. Now, I wondered if Trent regretted it, if he wished things had turned out differently.
I watched Kira join Trent and Colin by the grill.
They laughed, and everything seemed normal, but then I saw Kira touch Trent’s shoulder. It wasn’t much, but it felt too comfortable.
That night, when we got home, Trent didn’t say a word. He just went straight to bed, leaving me alone with my thoughts and fears.
A few days later, I found him in the hallway, tying his shoes.
“You just got home,” I said, confused.
“Where are you going now?”
“I need to go back to work,” he replied, not looking at me.
“It’s already 8 p.m. What work can’t wait until tomorrow?” I asked.
“I got promoted. There’s more to do now,” he said, still focused on his shoes.
I felt my chest tighten.
“Trent, what’s going on? You don’t talk to me anymore. You’re always disappearing, always on your phone.
Just be honest with me—are you cheating? Is it with Kira?”
He stopped and looked at me. “What?
No. I’m not cheating with Kira. I promise,” he said, then stood up and left, shutting the door behind him.
I had reached my limit.
I was tired of the lies, the excuses, the constant hiding. That night, when Trent rushed out, I decided to follow him. I kept my distance, hands tight on the steering wheel.
He drove to Kira’s house.
Anger surged through me. How could he lie to my face and then sneak off to her? I parked down the street, my hands shaking as I got out.
I could hardly breathe. This was it—the moment that would change everything.
The front door was open, and I stepped inside. I moved quietly, my heart thudding louder with each step.
I headed toward the bedroom, hearing soft whispers, then sounds no wife wants to hear. My stomach twisted, but I pushed forward.
When I opened the door, I froze. Trent was in bed, but not with Kira.
He was with Colin. I stood there, numb. “What the…” was all I could manage to say, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Alison!” Trent jumped, pulling the blanket over himself.
“I can explain.”
I felt cold, my hands trembling. “Don’t come home tonight,” I said, then turned and ran. Trent called after me, but I didn’t look back.
Tears blurred my vision as I drove away, wishing he’d listen and stay away.
It had been a few days since I caught Trent with Colin. I hadn’t seen him since that night. Nora kept asking, “Where’s Dad?” and each time, I had no answer.
I could only tell her he was busy with work.
Meanwhile, Trent’s messages flooded my phone, one after another. By the time he had sent fifty, I finally replied, telling him I needed time.
I couldn’t believe this was happening. How could he lie to me for so many years?
