Not everyone should be considered your close family. I married my partner in a modest ceremony and reception in our backyard.

And this time, my wife didn’t intervene. Her silence made me think she, too, wished for her mother to be gone.
We arranged for her to move into a senior living home, where she would be responsible for her expenses.
Since then, she has adopted a humbler attitude.
