Thankfully, she never had to do that, but it made a lasting impression on me of unconditional love and the importance of family. My father held a demanding job that often kept him from being home for dinner. Instead, we made a point to have breakfast together every morning, with him driving us to school afterward.
Only as an adult—when I craved sleep and found myself confronted with stressful work situations—did I realize how much of a sacrifice that was. Those breakfast moments were truly our family time with Dad. Even when my siblings entered their teenage years and school started later, they were made to wake up for breakfast (only to go back to bed later).
I have great respect for that tradition. When I was young, we lived near a freeway, and I once asked my mom how far it stretched and where we would end up if we just kept driving. Instead of pulling out a map, she said, “Let’s see.” We jumped into the car and drove for hours until we were both exhausted, eventually using the map to find a route home along one of the Great Lakes.
This was back in the ’80s, before GPS or cell phones. I was maybe ten, and she allowed me to navigate. She could have easily shown me the map from the couch, but she chose to make it an experience, sharing her sense of adventure with me.
That’s just how she is—truly remarkable. My parents relocated to Canada solely to provide my brother and me with a better life: a better environment, more opportunities—just the best of everything. They left behind all our family and friends, moving here as a family of four.
For those first few years, they poured their efforts into creating a new life, earning little and living in a small Toronto apartment. In hindsight, I’m astonished they didn’t return home, where they had stable jobs and a support system. I couldn’t be more grateful that they stayed.
Everything I have and who I am today, I owe to their unwavering love and support. While our parents strive to give us joyful lives, it’s essential to acknowledge that they sometimes keep hidden deep and transformative secrets. In this article, people reveal the most significant and astonishing family secrets they uncovered that changed their understanding of reality and altered their lives.
